EURO redesign
Design-proposal for new EURO banknotes.
In collaboration with Johanna Bayerlein.
We were both fed up with the lame design of the existing euro banknotes as well as with the idea of using brigdes as mission statement.
Our proposal is based on a pile of research examining aspects such as: the percentaged amount of colors used in the flags of euro countries and their grafical structures (horizontal, vertical, crossed,...) We developped a grid in which each flag structure fits in, similiar to the flag of England. The percentaged amount of the most common color (red) was given to the highest banknote (500). We designed a composition of all possible flag shapes which can be built in the basic flag-grid (toolkit europe). Those abstract images which still relates to a flag due to it´s geometrical structure were used as background images for the banknotes.
As mission statement we decided to use standard farm animals:
• common and generally known
• neutral and not related to any specific country or culture
• relates to the traditional trading system of former times (Werte-Tauschsystem)
• simplicity and playfullness vs. capitalism
Beside those aspects it´s even possible that for example the term "one hundred euro" is replaced by "pig" in linguistic use. You wouldn´t say anymore: "You owe my 100 euros" but "You owe me a pig". Or: "I trade this chair with a pig".
